Pulsemint

AI answering service in Northampton

By Shadman Chowdhury, founder of Pulsemint · Updated 5 November 2026

Pulsemint is an AI answering service for Northampton tradespeople and small businesses. It answers your 01604 number or mobile when you're busy, takes the caller's name, number, address and the job, and texts you a summary within about a minute. It costs £199 a month including up to 50 captured calls, with a free 14 day pilot and no contract.

Northampton has a lot of trade work packed into a fairly small area, and a lot of competition for it. When a customer rings three tradespeople, the one who rings back first usually wins. This page covers how that plays out locally.

Leave your name and email, then pick a time for a 15 minute setup call. No card and no contract. You keep your number.

Want to hear it first? Talk to the agent now. It answers questions about Pulsemint itself, and nobody will ring you back.

Three step diagram of how Pulsemint works: a call you don't answer diverts after a few rings, the agent takes the caller's name, number, job and address, and the details arrive on your phone as a text within about a minute.
How it works: your number stays the same, unanswered calls divert, and you get the details by text.

Why Northampton trades miss calls

The town has two very different kinds of housing. The streets around the old boot and shoe quarter, and areas like Abington and Semilong, are full of terraces built when Northampton made shoes for half the country. Then there's everything built during the new town expansion from the late 1960s onwards, across the Eastern District estates like Lings, Lumbertubs and Thorplands, and south of the river at East and West Hunsbury.

Both keep trades busy. Old terraces need rewires, new pipework and roof repairs. The 1970s and 80s estates are on their second or third boiler and their original windows and fascias are going. Add newer developments like Upton, and there's no shortage of work. There is a shortage of time to answer the phone while you're doing it.

Getting Northampton addresses right

Callers in Northampton often give the estate rather than the street, and some estates share names. East Hunsbury and West Hunsbury are on opposite sides of the A45. Grange Park sits just outside the town boundary. Duston, Kingsthorpe, Weston Favell, Moulton and Wootton are all distinct, and callers from the surrounding villages may say "Northampton" when they mean somewhere half an hour out.

Pulsemint takes the full address and postcode and reads it back. If you only cover certain areas, I set it up so it can tell callers further out that you don't travel that far, which saves both of you a wasted call.

Close to the motorway, far from your phone

With the M1 junctions on the edge of town and warehouses and offices around Brackmills, plenty of Northampton trades also do commercial work. Facilities managers ring during office hours and expect a quick response. They aren't going to wait a day for a callback when there are other contractors on their list.

What a call looks like

Example call, to show how it works

A homeowner in Kingsthorpe rings at 12.15pm. They've bought a 1930s semi and the survey flagged the old fuse box. They want a quote for a consumer unit upgrade and to know whether the house needs a full rewire.

ROUTINE, QUOTE. Consumer unit upgrade, possible rewire. 1930s semi, old fuse box flagged on survey. Just bought, moving in next month. Tom and Lucy, 07700 900434, 18 Example Road, Kingsthorpe, NN2. Evenings best.

One thing to be upfront about: Pulsemint is run from Lowestoft, not Northampton. The agent answers calls remotely, so where it's based makes no difference to the caller. What matters is whether it gets Northampton addresses right, and whether you can reach a person when you want something changed. You can: you deal with me directly.

Keeping your 01604 number

Your number doesn't change. Whether customers ring a 01604 landline or your mobile, your phone diverts the calls you don't answer to Pulsemint after however many rings you choose. Your van, your website, your Google Business Profile and your Checkatrade or MyBuilder listing all stay exactly as they are.

Setup takes about ten minutes of your time. I set the agent up with your business name, the trades you do, the Northampton areas you cover and anywhere you won't travel to. If anything ever fails at our end, calls ring your phone as they do now.

Trades we answer for in Northampton

Each trade gets different questions, because a plumber and a roofer need to know different things before they ring back. These pages explain what the agent asks for each one:

Working on your own? There's a page on using Pulsemint as a virtual receptionist for sole traders, and one on evening and weekend cover.

Is it worth it for a Northampton business?

Only your own numbers can answer that. Count last week's missed calls, take out the spam and suppliers, and be realistic about how many were jobs you'd have won. Multiply by what a job is worth to you. If it comes to more than £199 a month, it pays. If it doesn't, a better voicemail and missed call text back may be all you need. The calculator on the Pulsemint homepage does the sum for you, and this guide explains the method.

Common questions

Can I keep my 01604 number?

Yes. Your phone diverts the calls you don't answer to Pulsemint, and nothing changes on your van or listings.

Does it work for commercial calls as well as homeowners?

Yes. It takes the company name, the site address, the contact's details and how urgent the job is, and marks business calls so you can spot them.

Will it understand estate names like Hunsbury and Lings?

It takes the full postcode as well as the area name and reads it back, so you know exactly where the job is.

Can it tell callers I don't cover their area?

Yes. You tell me where you work, and it can let callers outside that area know straight away.

What happens after the 14 day pilot?

If it's caught jobs you'd have lost, it's £199 a month with no contract. If not, you stop and pay nothing.

Who is behind this

I'm Shadman, and I build and run Pulsemint myself from Lowestoft. When you start the pilot, I set the agent up for your business and you deal with me directly, not a support queue. If it doesn't catch jobs you'd otherwise have lost, don't keep it.
