AI answering service in Norwich
Pulsemint is an AI answering service for Norwich tradespeople and small businesses. When you can't get to the phone, it answers your 01603 number or mobile, takes the caller's name, number, address and what they need, and texts you the details within about a minute, so the job doesn't go to the next firm on the list. It costs £199 a month including up to 50 captured calls, with a free 14 day pilot and no contract.
Norwich is the nearest city to where I'm based, and a lot of what makes calls here tricky is particular to Norfolk: long drives between jobs, old buildings, and place names that aren't said the way they're spelled.

Why Norwich trades miss so many calls
Work around Norwich is spread out. A plumber or electrician based in the city might be in Taverham in the morning, Wymondham after lunch and out towards the Broads by the end of the day. A lot of that time is spent driving on the A47, the A11 or the A140, which isn't a good time to be answering the phone.
Then there's the housing. The Golden Triangle and the streets off Unthank Road are full of Victorian terraces with original pipework and wiring that's been extended more than once. In the medieval centre around Elm Hill and Tombland there are listed buildings and conservation area rules to work around. Out in the villages, plenty of homes are flint cottages with their own quirks. That makes for jobs that run long, which means calls that go unanswered.
Getting Norfolk addresses right
An answering service is only useful if the address it writes down is the one the customer gave. Norfolk tests that harder than most places.
A caller from Wymondham will say "Windum". Someone in Costessey will say "Cossey". Happisburgh on the coast is closer to "Haze-bruh". A service tuned mainly for American callers will write down nonsense, and you end up ringing the customer back to ask where they live, which isn't a good start.
I set Pulsemint up with the places you actually cover and test it with real Norfolk names before it goes live. It reads the address and postcode back to the caller so mistakes get caught on the call, not when you're sat outside the wrong house.
It helps that NR postcodes cover a huge area, from Norwich itself out to Cromer, Fakenham and even Lowestoft, which is NR32 and NR33. A full postcode tells you straight away whether a job is ten minutes away or an hour.
What a call looks like
A landlord rings at 5.45pm about a terraced house off Unthank Road. The tenants say the hot water is lukewarm and there's a damp patch under the bathroom window. He'd like someone this week.
ROUTINE, LANDLORD. Lukewarm hot water and damp patch under bathroom window, Victorian terrace. Tenants in, need 24 hours notice. Peter, 07700 900311. Property: 41 Example Street, NR2. Wants this week.
One thing to be upfront about: Pulsemint is run from Lowestoft, not Norwich. The agent answers calls remotely, so where it's based makes no difference to the caller. What matters is whether it gets Norwich addresses right, and whether you can reach a person when you want something changed. You can: you deal with me directly.
Keeping your 01603 number
Your number doesn't change. Whether customers ring a 01603 landline or your mobile, your phone diverts the calls you don't answer to Pulsemint after however many rings you choose. Your van, your website, your Google Business Profile and your Checkatrade or MyBuilder listing all stay exactly as they are.
Setup takes about ten minutes of your time. I set the agent up with your business name, the trades you do, the Norwich areas you cover and anywhere you won't travel to. If anything ever fails at our end, calls ring your phone as they do now.
Trades we answer for in Norwich
Each trade gets different questions, because a plumber and a roofer need to know different things before they ring back. These pages explain what the agent asks for each one:
- Plumbers, including leaks, stopcocks and landlord calls
- Electricians, including power cuts, EICRs and rewires
- Gas and heating engineers, including fault codes and gas smells
- Roofers, including storm damage and flat roofs
- Builders, including extensions and planning questions
- Locksmiths, including lockouts and security upgrades
Working on your own? There's a page on using Pulsemint as a virtual receptionist for sole traders, and one on evening and weekend cover.
Is it worth it for a Norwich business?
Only your own numbers can answer that. Count last week's missed calls, take out the spam and suppliers, and be realistic about how many were jobs you'd have won. Multiply by what a job is worth to you. If it comes to more than £199 a month, it pays. If it doesn't, a better voicemail and missed call text back may be all you need. The calculator on the Pulsemint homepage does the sum for you, and this guide explains the method.
Common questions
Do I need an answering service based in Norwich?
No. Calls are answered remotely, so location makes no difference to the caller. What matters is that it handles Norfolk place names properly and that you can reach a person when you need something changed.
Will it understand places like Wymondham and Costessey?
Yes. I set it up with the places you cover and test it with local names, and it reads the address and postcode back to the caller to check.
Can I keep my 01603 number?
Yes. Your phone diverts the calls you don't answer, so your number stays the same everywhere.
Do you cover the villages outside Norwich?
The agent answers any call to your number, wherever it comes from. You tell me which areas you cover, and it can tell callers outside them that you don't travel that far.
How quickly do I get the details?
Within about a minute of the call ending, as a text and an email.
Who is behind this
I'm Shadman, and I build and run Pulsemint myself from Lowestoft. When you start the pilot, I set the agent up for your business and you deal with me directly, not a support queue. If it doesn't catch jobs you'd otherwise have lost, don't keep it.
