AI answering service in Plymouth
Pulsemint is an AI answering service for Plymouth tradespeople and small businesses. When you can't pick up your 01752 number or mobile, it answers, takes the caller's name, number, full address and the job, and texts you the details within about a minute. It costs £199 a month including up to 50 captured calls, with a free 14 day pilot and no contract.
Plymouth weather keeps local trades busy, and a lot of your work may be on the Cornish side of the Tamar. This page covers what that means for the calls you miss.

Why Plymouth trades miss calls
Plymouth takes the weather straight off the Atlantic. Wind-driven rain finds every gap in a roof, a chimney or a window frame, and salt air on the waterfront wears out anything metal faster than it would inland. After a proper storm, roofers, builders and anyone who does damp and leaks will have their phones ringing for days.
The housing adds to it. Much of the city centre was rebuilt after the Blitz, so there's a lot of post-war construction now reaching the age where it needs real work. Around Mutley, Peverell, Stoke and Keyham there are long streets of Victorian terraces. Devonport has older naval housing. Out at Plympton, Plymstock and Ivybridge it's mostly newer estates. Every kind of job, and plenty of it.
Both sides of the Tamar
A lot of Plymouth trades work across the Tamar Bridge in Saltash, Torpoint and further into Cornwall. Those callers have PL postcodes too, but they're a different drive, and the bridge toll and traffic make a difference to how you plan your day.
The agent takes the full address and postcode and reads it back, so you can see at a glance whether a job is in PL4 in the city or PL12 across the river. If you don't cross the bridge, I'll set it up to tell Cornish callers that before they wait for a callback.
What a call looks like
A homeowner in Peverell rings at 3.35pm after a wet and windy weekend. Water has come through the back bedroom ceiling near the chimney breast. It's a Victorian terrace and the leak only shows in heavy rain.
URGENT-ISH. Leak through back bedroom ceiling by chimney breast, only in heavy rain. Victorian terrace, 2 storey. Possible flashing. Mel, 07700 900680, 33 Example Road, Peverell, PL3. Home after 4. Can send photo.
One thing to be upfront about: Pulsemint is run from Lowestoft, not Plymouth. The agent answers calls remotely, so where it's based makes no difference to the caller. What matters is whether it gets Plymouth addresses right, and whether you can reach a person when you want something changed. You can: you deal with me directly.
Keeping your 01752 number
Your number doesn't change. Whether customers ring a 01752 landline or your mobile, your phone diverts the calls you don't answer to Pulsemint after however many rings you choose. Your van, your website, your Google Business Profile and your Checkatrade or MyBuilder listing all stay exactly as they are.
Setup takes about ten minutes of your time. I set the agent up with your business name, the trades you do, the Plymouth areas you cover and anywhere you won't travel to. If anything ever fails at our end, calls ring your phone as they do now.
Trades we answer for in Plymouth
Each trade gets different questions, because a plumber and a roofer need to know different things before they ring back. These pages explain what the agent asks for each one:
- Plumbers, including leaks, stopcocks and landlord calls
- Electricians, including power cuts, EICRs and rewires
- Gas and heating engineers, including fault codes and gas smells
- Roofers, including storm damage and flat roofs
- Builders, including extensions and planning questions
- Locksmiths, including lockouts and security upgrades
Working on your own? There's a page on using Pulsemint as a virtual receptionist for sole traders, and one on evening and weekend cover.
Is it worth it for a Plymouth business?
Only your own numbers can answer that. Count last week's missed calls, take out the spam and suppliers, and be realistic about how many were jobs you'd have won. Multiply by what a job is worth to you. If it comes to more than £199 a month, it pays. If it doesn't, a better voicemail and missed call text back may be all you need. The calculator on the Pulsemint homepage does the sum for you, and this guide explains the method.
Common questions
Does it cover calls from Saltash and Torpoint?
It answers every call to your number. Tell me whether you cross the Tamar, and it can let callers outside your area know straight away.
Can I keep my 01752 number?
Yes. Your phone diverts the calls you don't answer, and your number stays the same everywhere.
Will it cope with the rush after a storm?
Yes. It answers every call you don't, so you see every enquiry as a text and choose which jobs to take first.
Do I need a Plymouth based answering service?
No. It answers remotely for any number you divert to it. What matters is that it gets local addresses right.
What does it cost?
£199 a month including up to 50 captured calls, after a 14 day free pilot.
Who is behind this
I'm Shadman, and I build and run Pulsemint myself from Lowestoft. When you start the pilot, I set the agent up for your business and you deal with me directly, not a support queue. If it doesn't catch jobs you'd otherwise have lost, don't keep it.
