Why Swindon trades miss calls
Swindon was built on the Great Western Railway. The Railway Village near the old works is a conservation area of stone terraces built for railway workers in the 1840s, and Old Town on the hill is older still. Then the town kept growing: West Swindon in the 1970s and 80s, with areas like Freshbrook, Toothill, Shaw and Westlea, and North Swindon after that, with Abbey Meads, Haydon Wick, Taw Hill and Redhouse. The newest homes are going up at Tadpole Garden Village and Wichelstowe.
That mix means very different work across a small area. Careful repairs in a listed terrace one day, a boiler swap in a 1980s semi the next, and a snagging list on a new build after that. All of it fills your day, and the phone keeps ringing while you're doing it.
Getting Swindon addresses right
Swindon callers tend to give the area name, and a lot of the newer ones sound alike. The agent takes the full address and SN postcode and reads it back. A caller from Wroughton, Highworth or Royal Wootton Bassett may say "Swindon" too, and you'll want to know how far out they are before you ring back.
It also takes directions when callers offer them. In a town where people navigate by roundabouts, including the famous Magic Roundabout, "just past the second roundabout" is more useful than it sounds.
What a call looks like
A couple in Tadpole Garden Village ring at 6.15pm. Their new build is eighteen months old and water is pooling under the kitchen sink. The developer's warranty team hasn't called back in a week.
URGENT. Water pooling under kitchen sink, slow leak, new build 18 months. Developer not responding. Stopcock located, can turn off if needed. Ben and Amy, 07700 900639, 20 Example Way, SN25. Home evenings.
One thing to be upfront about: Pulsemint is run from Lowestoft, not Swindon. The agent answers calls remotely, so where it's based makes no difference to the caller. What matters is whether it gets Swindon addresses right, and whether you can reach a person when you want something changed. You can: you deal with me directly.
Keeping your 01793 number
Your number doesn't change. Whether customers ring a 01793 landline or your mobile, your phone diverts the calls you don't answer to Pulsemint after however many rings you choose. Your van, your website, your Google Business Profile and your Checkatrade or MyBuilder listing all stay exactly as they are.
Setup takes about ten minutes of your time. I set the agent up with your business name, the trades you do, the Swindon areas you cover and anywhere you won't travel to. If anything ever fails at our end, calls ring your phone as they do now.
Trades we answer for in Swindon
Each trade gets different questions, because a plumber and a roofer need to know different things before they ring back. These pages explain what the agent asks for each one:
- Plumbers, including leaks, stopcocks and landlord calls
- Electricians, including power cuts, EICRs and rewires
- Gas and heating engineers, including fault codes and gas smells
- Roofers, including storm damage and flat roofs
- Builders, including extensions and planning questions
- Locksmiths, including lockouts and security upgrades
Working on your own? There's a page on using Pulsemint as a virtual receptionist for sole traders, and one on evening and weekend cover.
Is it worth it for a Swindon business?
Only your own numbers can answer that. Count last week's missed calls, take out the spam and suppliers, and be realistic about how many were jobs you'd have won. Multiply by what a job is worth to you. If it comes to more than £199 a month, it pays. If it doesn't, a better voicemail and missed call text back may be all you need. The calculator on the Pulsemint homepage does the sum for you, and this guide explains the method.
Common questions
Can I keep my 01793 number?
Yes. Unanswered calls divert to Pulsemint, and your number stays on your van, website and listings.
Will it get Swindon addresses right?
It takes the area, the full address and the SN postcode and reads them back to the caller to check.
Does it cover Wroughton and Royal Wootton Bassett?
It answers every call to your number. Tell me which areas you cover, and it can let callers outside them know before they wait for a callback.
Can it deal with new build snagging calls?
Yes. It takes what's wrong, how old the house is and whether the developer has been contacted, so you can decide whether it's a job for you.
What happens if I don't like it?
Stop within the 14 day pilot and you pay nothing. After that it's monthly with no contract.
Who is behind this
I'm Shadman, and I build and run Pulsemint myself from Lowestoft. When you start the pilot, I set the agent up for your business and you deal with me directly, not a support queue. If it doesn't catch jobs you'd otherwise have lost, don't keep it.
